    Lithonia is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,187 at the 2000 census. "Lithonia" means "City of Stone." Lithonia is also home to New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.

    Lithonia is in the heart of the Georgia granite district, hence the name of the town, from the Greek lithos, for stone. The nearby granite dome, Stone Mountain, is composed largely of a rock called Lithonia gneiss.

    Lithonia is located at 33°42′46″N, 84°6′21″W (33.712658, -84.105897)GR1.

    According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.0 km² (0.8 mi²), all land.

    As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,187 people, 799 households, and 560 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,068.9/km² (2,770.2/mi²). There were 892 housing units at an average density of 436.0/km² (1,129.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 16.64% White, 79.6% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.42% from other races, and 2.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.88% of the population.

    There were 799 households out of which 40.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 23.3% were married couples living together, 41.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.25.

    In the city the population was spread out with 34.4% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 76.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and ..."
